Striking Russia helps calm embattled city
Ukraine's army has struck missile launch positions in Russia, reducing the attacks on the city of Kharkiv, its mayor said.
Ihor Terekhov’s comments came after US President Joe Biden approved US weapons to strike targets inside Russia used to attack Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city close to the Russian border.
While missile and drone strikes continue, Terekhov said the change had helped bring relative “calm.” Terekhov is attending a conference in Germany encouraging investment in Ukraine.
Kharkiv has struggled to intercept strikes because of the lack of suitable weapons. Deliveries were held up by political wrangling in Washington.
Kharkiv has been repeatedly hit, including an attack on a printing works that killed seven and another on a DIY hardware store in late May that killed at least 14.

Grossman gets 15 years to life for murder
Rebecca Grossman was sentenced to 15 years to life for the murders of two brothers she struck speeding through a crosswalk.
The sentencing ends a nearly four-year criminal saga in which prosecutors say Grossman refused to accept responsibility for the 8- and 11-year-old boys’ deaths and tried to manipulate the case.
Grossman was convicted in February of two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter and one count of hit and run with fatality in the Sept. 2020 killings.
Grossman had been drinking cocktails at a nearby restaurant. She was driving as fast as 81 mph and traveled another half-mile after slamming into the children, according to evidence.

Baltimore channel open after bridge collapse
The main shipping channel into Baltimore’s port has fully reopened to its original depth and width.
The reopening follows the March 26 collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which blocked most maritime traffic. Crews removed around 50,000 tons of steel and concrete from the Patapsco River.
The bridge collapsed after a container ship lost power and crashed into one of its supporting columns, sending six members of a roadwork crew plunging to their deaths.
Thousands of longshoremen, truckers and small business owners have seen their jobs impacted by the collapse, prompting local and state officials to prioritize reopening the port.

Rules to affect dogs entering from abroad
To control rabies, the federal government on Monday said changes will take effect on August 1 for dogs entering the US.
Dogs entering the country must appear healthy upon arrival, be at least six months old, be microchipped and be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form receipt.
Proof of rabies vaccination may be required based on where the dog was in the last six months before arriving in the US and where the canine got vaccinated.
Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say dog rabies is not controlled in over 100 of 195 countries, which is why “there is an inherent risk in imported dogs.”

Instrument to search for life on other planets
An instrument on a telescope in Chile's Atacama Desert will search for life in exoplanets and look for the first stars.
The European Southern Observatory (ESO) has signed an agreement for the design and construction of ANDES, the ArmazoNes high Dispersion Echelle Spectrograph.
The ANDES instrument will be installed on ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (pictured) and split light into wavelengths to determine astronomical objects’ properties, such as chemical compositions.
The collection of comprehensive data will be used to measure the acceleration of the universe's expansion directly, one of the most pressing mysteries about the cosmos.

Tallest rideable bicycle is 25 feet, 5 inches
Two friends in France built the world's tallest rideable bicycle—25 feet, 5 inches high.
Nicolas Barrioz and David Peyrou said they came up with the idea while drinking at a pub. They soon started creating designs and sourcing materials. The bike took about two years to build.
Like a regular bicycle, it has a saddle, two standard-sized wheels, and a handlebar connected to two brake levers. Unlike a regular bicycle, the pedals connect to the rear wheel by a 53-foot chain.
The bicycle is made from alloy, steel, and wood, primarily from recycled furniture. David rode it unassisted over 100 meters to prove it worked and earn the Guinness World Record.
