https://William%20Davies%E2%80%99s%20excellent%20article%20%E2%80%9CBonfire%20of%20the%20bureaucrats%E2%80%9D%20(Cover%20Story,%202%20May)%20misses%20one%20key%20point:%20Britain%E2%80%99s%20centralised%20state.%20One%20example%20will%20suffice.%20Lawnswood%20in%20Leeds%20is%20famous%20for%20two%20reasons.%20Alan%20Bennett%20went%20to%20Lawnswood%20School%20%E2%80%93%20and%20it%20has%20one%20of%20the%20most%20dangerous%20roundabouts%20in%20the%20city.%20In%20the%20past,%20Leeds%20Council%E2%80%99s%20highly%20qualified%20engineers%20drew%20up%20plans%20to%20improve%20the%20roundabout%20and%20sent%20them%20to%20the%20government%20as%20part%20of%20their%20annual%20transport%20bid.%20Unbelievably,%20the%20Leeds%20engineers%20now%20have%20to%20send%20the%20plans%20to%20the%20West%20Yorkshire%20mayor%E2%80%99s%20office%20who%20examine%20them,%20and%20send%20them%20on%20to%20London,%20and%20the%20circus%20continues.%20Can%20you%20imagine%20Chicago%20sending%20plans%20for%20a%20roundabout%20to%20Washington,%20or%20Lille%20to%20Paris?%20This%20process%20is%20replicated%20across%20council%20departments.%20Until%20Westminster%20devolves%20powers%20to%20local%20government,%20it%20will%20be%20necessary%20to%20employ%20thousands%20of%20civil%20services%20in%20London%20to%20mark%20local%20authorities%E2%80%99%20homework.%20David%20Kennedy,%20Ilkley,%20West%20Yorkshire%20Digitise%20It%20Yourself%20The%20eternal%20debate%20about%20the%20size%20and%20efficiency%20of%20taxpayer-funded%20bureaucracies%20needs%20to%20be%20broadened%20from%20a%20focus%20on%20civil%20servants%20to%20include%20the%20wider%20public%20service,%20which,%20thanks%20to%20a%20combination%20of%20austerity%20and%20digitisation%20(and%20now%20AI),%20is%20undergoing%20a%20process%20of%20what%20I%20would%20describe%20as%20%E2%80%9Clibraryfication%E2%80%9D.%20This%20refers%20to%20the%20increasing%20use%20of%20volunteers%20to%20run%20public%20services%20that%20otherwise%20might%20disappear.%20It%20increasingly%20includes%20DIY%20services%20where%20it%20is%20assumed%20that%20everybody%20should%20go%20online%20to%20do%20tasks%20previously%20performed%20by%20paid%20staff.%20%E2%80%9CBureaucrats%E2%80%9D%20may%20disappear,%20but%20the%20cybersecurity%20industry%20will%20continue%20to%20grow%20exponentially.%20And%20of%20course%20we%20will%20all%20have%20the%20opportunity%20to%20provide%20%E2%80%9Cfeedback%E2%80%9D%20%E2%80%93%20even%20if%20there%E2%80%99s%20no%20one%20left%20to%20read%20it.%20Colin%20Challen,%20Scarborough%20Changing%20the%20narrative%20Andrew%20Marr%20is%20wrong%20to%20suggest%20%E2%80%9Ccurbing%20migration%E2%80%9D%20is%20one%20of%20the%20four%20essentials%20for%20Starmer%20to%20win%20the%20next%20election%20(Politics,%202%20May).%20The%20Home%20Office%E2%80%99s%20steps%20to%20reduce%20or%20offshore%20asylum%20claims%20and%20to%20limit%20legal%20migration%20numbers%20only%20serve%20to%20reinforce%20the%20legitimacy%20of%20the%20even%20more%20extreme%20and%20inhumane%20policies%20of%20Reform.%20Labour%20must%20reframe%20this%20narrative.%20It%20is%20absurd%20that%20potential%20overseas%20NHS%20staff,%20care%20workers,%20students%20and%20researchers%20are%20discouraged%20from%20coming%20to%20the%20UK%20because%20of%20counterproductive%20restrictions%20on%20family%20members%20and%20very%20high%20costs.%20%20Yes,%20Marr%20is%20right%20that%20Starmer%20must%20finally%20%E2%80%9Cfind%20his%20voice%20and%20move%20decisively%E2%80%9D.%20But%20he%20needs%20to%20do%20more%20with%20it%20than%20sing%20Farage%E2%80%99s%20tune.%20Gideon%20Ben-Tovim%20OBE,%20University%20of%20Liverpool%20%20Young%20historians%20While%20I%20endorse%20Richard%20J%20Evans%E2%80%99s%20praise%20for%20Tim%20Bouverie%E2%80%99s%20Allies%20at%20War,%20I%20want%20to%20query%20his%20ageist%20comment%20that%20the%20subject%20was%20%E2%80%9Ca%20formidable%20challenge%20for%20any%20historian,%20let%20alone%20one%20still%20in%20his%20thirties%E2%80%9D.%20There%20are%20numerous%20precedents%20for%20British%20historians%20under%2040%20making%20impressive%20contributions%20to%20German%20history.%20Think%20of%20Alan%20Bullock%E2%80%99s%20Hitler:%20A%20Study%20in%20Tyranny,%20AJP%20Taylor%E2%80%99s%20The%20Course%20of%20German%20History%20and%20Hugh%20Trevor%20Roper%E2%80%99s%20The%20Last%20Days%20of%20Hitler.%20From%20America,%20there%20is%20the%20young%20Daniel%20Goldhagen%E2%80%99s%20Hitler%E2%80%99s%20Willing%20Executioners.%20There%20is%20no%20doubt%20in%20my%20mind%20that%20Tim%20Bouverie%E2%80%99s%20is%20the%20most%20formidable%20%E2%80%93%20at%20least%20until%20the%20next%2030-year-old%20historian%20publishes%20their%20magnum%20opus.%20Colin%20Richards,%20Spark%20Bridge,%20Cumbria%20%20Music%20to%20my%20ears%20I%20found%20Kate%20Mossman%E2%80%99s%20review%20of%20Alice%20Vincent%E2%80%99s%20Hark:%20How%20Women%20Listen%20(The%20Critics,%202%20May)%20profoundly%20interesting.%20Yes,%20I%20may%20be%20a%20man,%20but%20I%20have%20never%20once%20perceived%20aural%20perception%20as%20gendered:%2
