The New Album From One of Our Greatest Songwriters Is a Mini-Masterpiece

Lucy Dacus's new album, Forever is a Feeling , is a minor masterpiece of modern songwriting about love.

The singer-songwriter confirms that she and Julien Baker are in a committed relationship.

Dacus is a leading figure there, on her own (this is her fourth solo album) and especially as a member of Boygenius , her "supergroup".

"Ankles" is one -part queer Rumours, featuring a roundabout of shifting characters and entanglements, some of whom appear themselves on the record, and another part a gay (rather than Gaye ) Let's Get It On.

The record generally sustains a midtempo mood, a slow jam with occasional surge in pace or volume.

Even on “Ankles,” when she asks her potential lover, “How lucky are we to have so much to lose” it is celebratory, but with a recognition of the potential disaster.

That rule extends especially to the album’s most anthemic song, " Best Guess ," which Dacus has said she thought of as a wedding song.
