The German establishment’s desperate stitch-up

Friedrich Merz and his conservative Christian Democratic Union ( CDU ) may have come out on top.

But they did so on just 28.5 per cent of the vote.

This is the CDU ’s second -worst result ever.

Voters directed most of their anger at governing coalition parties.

The right-wing populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) won 20.8 per cent .
