Josh Hawley , a Missouri Republican U.S. senator, introduced a bill to speed up radioactive contamination testing.
The bill would review all testing and provide financial assistance to schools affected by radioactive contaminants.
Hawley said the origin of the problem dates back to the Manhattan Project when the city was one of the major uranium processing sites in the nation.
Hawley said his bill is in the sweet spot where conservative populism and social justice activism meet and accomplish something.
“This effort cuts across party lines. To me, honoring working people, respecting them, getting them what they need and deserve and what is due them. This has nothing to do with party,” he said.
