Can vegans and carnivores peacefully co-exist?

Gallup survey: 4% of Americans identify as vegetarians, 1% as vegans; 15% of those under 40 identify as vegetarian or vegan.

With no advance notice or fanfare, my 23-year-old son announced in January that he was vegan.

He had friends who were vegan and had been reading their posts on Instagram about animal cruelty.

But surprisingly, the vegans writing there seemed perfectly content with eating what they can at a family gathering and ignoring the rest, she says.

Costello says young vegans will not tolerate mistreatment of animals that the boomers looked away from.

She says the market for plant-based meat alternatives is already slipping.
