Defense Minister Gen Nakatani reportedly said he was eager to take the lead in promoting exports of his country's defense equipment, along with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba .

This would mark another shift in Japan 's arms industry, which so far has been largely restricted to producing equipment for the Japan Self-Defense Forces , or JSDF only.

Experts told CNBC that the motivation was mostly due to security concerns, rather than any economic reasons.

Japan in 1967 adopted " Three Principles on Arms Exports " that restricted arms exports.

The country relaxed this stance under Abe , with former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida easing curbs further in 2023 .

The most recent changes allow defense equipment manufactured in Japan under license from foreign defense firms to be exported to the licensing country and from there to third countries.
