Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree says the bill addresses some issues that have been “irritants for the U.S. ” The bill aims to strengthen police, border service and intelligence agency powers to access information and data.
It also gives the government the power to suspend new applications and the processing of existing claims “for matters of public health and national security”.
“In order for me to bring forward legislation, it needed to have the safeguards in place, it needed to be in line with the values of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms ,” he said. “I fundamentally believe that we have (struck) the balance while expanding powers in certain instances, it does have the safeguards and the protections in place to protect individual freedoms and rights.”.
