April has suddenly become tomato planting time, and heat-loving annuals — like impatiens, marigolds and zinnias — are being set out even when evening temperatures still dip down close to frost.

What we need for all our gardens today is a longer-term vision of both the colour with which we surround our homes and fresh food we can grow.
