Regional District of Central Kootenay says it will ask the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to conduct further testing for avian flu on a flock of ostriches facing a cull.
Conservative MP Scott Anderson says he’s also trying to stop the federal agency from killing the flock.
Hundreds of people also attended a district meeting on Thursday where the cull was discussed.
Supporters of the farmers who oppose the cull have celebrated the resolution online.
District vice-chairman Aiden McLaren-Caux said the prospect of the cull was “horrifying” but the district “would likely have little legal standing” to refuse to accept the carcasses at the landfill.
Katie Pasitney , whose parents own the farm, attended the meeting in person.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has defended its decision to proceed with the cull.
