New study finds changes to British Columbia's practice standard inadvertently harmed cancer and palliative-care patients.

Rules were designed to reduce prescription drug misuse, including over-prescribing of opioids among patients with chronic non-cancer related pain.

Lead author Dimitra Panagiotoglou says there was a "spillover" effect as doctors applied "aggressive tapering" of painkillers.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC revised its standard in 2018 to address concerns that they were being misinterpreted.
