Physicists Turned Lead Into Goldâfor a Fraction of a Second

85% Informative
Scientists at CERN 's Large Hadron Collider used near-miss collisions to turn lead into gold.
Researchers ejected three protons from lead atoms, turning them into gold atoms.
The research was the first to systematically detect the signature of gold production at the LHC experimentally.
While the latest experiment produced nearly twice as much gold as previous attempts, the fleeting quantity is still trillions of times less than what a goldsmith would need to make a single piece of jewelry.
