Keith Gerein: Alberta government unwise to abolish conduct rules for city councillors

67% Informative
Alberta 's code of conduct has been required for municipal councils to set some rules on how council members interact with the public, interact with each other, treat staff, handle sensitive information, avoid abuses of power, use city assets appropriately.
The codes have engendered controversy, while critics suggest the codes are toothless, others say they are too easily weaponized.
Under Bill 50 , codes of conduct will no longer be mandatory, they won't even be optional, they will be prohibited from maintaining their own policies.
The work to develop a new code is likely to take several months , if not considerably longer.
For some of that time, the rulebooks that have been used by each municipality will no longer be in effect.
It would be a much saner approach to keep the current codes in place until the new universal one is finished.
