Capt Ibrahim Traoré: Why Burkina Faso's junta leader has captured hearts and minds around the world

82% Informative
Capt Ibrahim Traoré is a charismatic 37-year-old military ruler of Burkina Faso .
He is determined to free his nation from what he regards as the clutches of neo-colonialism.
His message has resonated across Africa and beyond, with admirers seeing him as following in the footsteps of African heroes like Thomas Sankara .
A survey in 39 countries by Afrobarometer showed a drop in support for democracy.
But it remained the most popular form of government.
Analyst says Traoré is media-savvy, and uses the past to build his popularity as a reincarnation of Sankara .
He said he was "offering an alternative, and re-capturing the spirit of two historic epochs".
President Traoré has shaken up West Africa by ordering French forces to leave.
Mali and Niger have also pulled out of the regional trade and security grouping Ecowas .
They have ended free trade in the region by announcing the imposition of a 0.5% tariff on goods coming into their countries.
