Individuals with Disabilities Act protects about 7.5 million students with disabilities in the U.S. Students with disabilities are guaranteed access to an Individualized Education Plan.

The majority of students protected under the laws have learning or developmental disabilities, including autism, dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and down's syndrome.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act also requires schools to help students attend and thrive in traditional classes with nondisabled students.

More than one million students with disabilities receive assistance from this type of education plan.

Students with disabilities may have access to both 504 plans and IEPs if they need adjustments to curriculum and the learning environment.
