Frida Ghitis : The debut of Donald Trump’s America has left some French triste, even brokenhearted, and also wary and vigilant.

She says 3 in 4 French people believe that the U.S. is no longer an ally of their country.

Ghitis asks some people, strangers as well as a few French friends, what they thought of this new “ America ,” only a few months old , and how their attitudes toward this country might have changed.

Frida Ghitis : France and the U.S. have been allies since World War I.

Ghitis talks to two women in Paris : "I feel like [ Americans ] are losing the ideals of justice and humanity," Ghitis says.

She asks: "That civic nationalism we thought of as bad is going to come back, and Europe will react accordingly" Ghitis asks: If the Republican Party won't allow Trump to openly violate the Constitution for a third term , Americans won't want the Constitution .

The next day was chilly, and I dropped in for a lunch of vegetable soup, pears and cheese with some old friends, Joshua and Rene .

Joshua has lived in the U.S. for more than 40 years ; Rene is 87 , and clearly remembers August 1944 , when his mother lifted him up in her arms to see the 6 -feet-5-inch-tall De Gaulle march into Paris .
