Auto analysts, suppliers and Unifor officials call U.S. President Donald Trump 's new approach on auto tariffs an even greater danger to the future of the Canadian industry than his original plan.

Trump signed an executive order Tuesday that gives domestic automakers a 15 per cent break on tariffs on imported parts.

Laval International president Jonathon Azzopardi said the tariff reductions help companies preserve some of their profits and give them a timeline to uproot supply chains.

Canadians purchased nearly 1.9 million vehicles in 2024 and Canada is the second largest market for the Detroit 3 automakers. There were 1.3 million vehicles built in Canada last year between the Detroit 3 , Honda and Toyota . Over 700,000 of those vehicles were manufactured by GM , Ford and Stellantis . “If automakers want to sell vehicles in Canada , they must be required to build here too,” Payne said.
