Vaughn Palmer: B.C. Ferries' 'legacy vessels' are mostly just liabilities

69% Informative
B.C. Ferries has ticketed the Coquitlam and its equally ancient sister ships, the Cowichan and the Alberni, for replacement in its $5.2-billion capital plan.
Also on the retirement list is the Queen of New Westminster , which was out of service for 200 days after losing a propeller last year .
The replacements will be built overseas at a cost expected to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars apiece.
The first ship won't be in service until 2029 at the earliest.
The New Democrats have not hesitated to interfere in independent agencies such as the B.C. Utilities Commission when it suits their purposes.
On that precedent, they might persuade the ferry commission to take a second look.
Premier David Eby responded to Hage ’s ruling by acknowledging that “the commissioner is independent and serves an important purpose of having a critical look”.
