Wild chimpanzees in Guinea-Bissau's Cantanhez National Park share alcoholic treats with friends and family

Researchers have documented wild chimpanzees repeatedly eating and sharing naturally fermented African breadfruit containing measurable amounts of ethanol.

The researchers measured the ethanol content of the fruits using a portable breathalyzer during a field study from April to July 2022 .

The research adds to growing evidence that human alcohol consumption may have deeper evolutionary roots than previously thought.
