Fania Oz-Salzberger on Israel’s Current Turmoil

Historian Fania Oz-Salzberger says Israel has entered a “worst case scenario” with hyper-nationalism, corruption and a government determined to take over Israeli democracy.

Her father, the celebrated novelist Amos Oz , was a staunch advocate for peace and a supporter of the two -state solution, while one of her sons is the founder and leader of the students' movement that is leading the street protests against the government.

Israel is conducting a dirty, ugly war in Gaza , but not a genocide, he says.

Israel is still a struggling, desperate, though deeply flawed liberal democracy, he adds.

He hopes international judicial probes will eventually reveal that this is not genocide.

Israel must be defeated and ousted from Gaza , not just for Israel ’s sake, but for the sake of Palestinians .

Many younger people want to march under simplistic banners like “Free Palestine” and “ From the River to the Sea” But a two -state solution requires historical understanding, acknowledgement of complexity, and willingness to compromise.
