A Colorado rancher has signed a first -of-its-kind agreement that will see a conservation organization help pay for his land leases in exchange for letting wildlife access it.
The Property and Environment Research Center ( PERC ) is paying not more than two-thirds of the cost for land leases that state cattle ranchers sometimes negotiate with private landowners.
PERC was started during the Cold War to find ways to use markets to incentivize and or commoditize conservation.
