After lengthy public hearing, Calgary council approves Viscount Bennett school redevelopment

73% Informative
Calgary council approves developer's plan to build more than 1,200 housing units on a former school site.
The former Viscount Bennett High School site in southwest Calgary was given the go-ahead after a lengthy public hearing on Tuesday .
The development is scaled down from what Minto Communities originally proposed in 2023 , which included 30 -storey towers and up to 2,500 units.
The developer claims the reduced density was to assuage residents’ concerns.
A majority of public hearing attendees appeared in opposition to the development.
But many did express their support for Minto ’s plans, calling it a “rare opportunity” to add a variety of new housing types in an established area that is already served by public transit.
A former student of Viscount Bennett High School , Christie Page , said the redevelopment of the former school site would be a 'rare' opportunity.
