Advocates cry foul after YouTube quietly removes ‘gender identity’ from hate speech policy

71% Informative
YouTube quietly scrubbed the phrase “gender identity and expression” from its public-facing hate speech policy earlier this year .
Advocacy groups and LGBTQ+ creators say the revision is a dangerous rollback at a time when transgender people face escalating attacks both online and offline.
A YouTube spokesperson said the update was part of routine "copy edits" and claimed enforcement of hate speech policies remains unchanged.
Christopher Wiggins is The Advocate ’s senior national reporter in Washington , D.C. , covering the intersection of public policy and politics with LGBTQ+ lives.
Wiggins is committed to amplifying untold stories, especially as the second Trump administration's policies impact LGBTQ+ (and particularly transgender) rights, and can be reached at [email protected].
