Calls grow for Poilievre to pull Conservative candidate Gunn
72% Informative
First Nations leaders call for North Island-Powell River Conservative candidate Aaron Gunn to be removed from the ballot.
Indigenous people make up nearly 13 per cent of the population in the riding, which includes more than 20 First Nations communities on both coasts of North Vancouver Island and along the Sunshine Coast and Central Coast on BC ’s mainland.
In his tweets, Gunn argues the treatment of Indigenous people isn’t genocide, while other posts vigorously defend the legacy of John A MacDonald .
Chief Chickite said he hasn't yet raised the issue of Gunn ’s past comments with him.
Chief Darren Blaney , a residential school survivor, said the tweets speak for themselves and are deeply troubling.
Gunn was parachuted into the riding as the Conservative candidate for the Island riding.
“I think that he should do that. But in all likelihood, Aaron Gunn is the representation of their values.” Rochelle Baker / Local Journalism Initiative / Canada’s National Observer .
