Maryland might ban formal ICE partnerships. Sheriffs strongly oppose it.
77% Informative
Maryland lawmakers are weighing whether to eliminate a decades-old immigration enforcement program.
The program allows local law enforcement officers to sign a collaborative agreement with U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement to work together to deport people who authorities say entered the country illegally.
287(g) partnerships in Maryland and across the country have more than doubled since President Donald Trump ’s inauguration.
There are three types of 287(g) partnerships, including one called the Jail Model that is used by three Maryland counties.
Opponents say many immigrant residents are scared to go out in public because of the Trump administration’s rhetoric around a deportation crackdown.
But sheriffs who testified in favor of the partnership argue ICE is primarily targeting violent criminals.
