President Shawn Fain is seeking to make inroads with the Trump administration on tariffs that could boost the autoworkers’ union.
Fain rose to national prominence during a historic strike against the Big Three automakers in 2023 .
The UAW represents some 400,000 workers and stands to benefit from the tariffs.
But finding common ground on trade policy with the president brings risks.
The UAW said it would “work with any politician, regardless of party, who is willing to reverse decades of working-class people going backwards in the most profitable times in our nation’s history” The union also called for the immediate renegotiation of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement .
