Researchers have long wanted to see if they could possibly fake quantum randomness.
They wanted to build “pseudorandom” quantum circuits, which seem to be truly random but can nonetheless be constructed relatively simply and manageably.
After years of uncertainty, two researchers posted a paper last October that proved it is in fact possible to construct such a circuit.
The new proof suggests new experimental possibilities for quantum computing and cryptography.
The proof could also provide physicists with a new method for studying black holes.
“The lines between physics and computation are becoming much more blurry,” says one of the co-authors of the proof.
