Canadian cities are undertaking a wave of densification projects and, as with such efforts in the past, are facing push back.
Density can be successful at many different levels, including very high densities, but that success is conditioned on a variety of factors, says Andrew Hammond .
Hammond: We must listen and respond to density’s detractors if the current densification push is to succeed.
Michael Hooper: Planners and elected officials need to listen to and build on many of the criticisms offered by detractors of current approaches to densification.
Hooper says good density is well supported by amenities and what constitutes good density varies by location.
He says there is no silver bullet for densification and those that say they know, absent engagement with the public, what model of densification will work for a city are unlikely to retain the public’s trust.
