In 2023 , the average woman working full time made a little more than $ 55,000 while the average man made nearly $67,000 .
That wage gap of 83 cents to the dollar has barely budged since 2003 and it’s even widened slightly.
Women employed in the U.S. lose a combined total of nearly $1.7 trillion each year due to the wage gap.
Several states have passed laws that aim to help even the playing field for women in the workforce.
The Equal Pay Act of 1963 sets a national precedent for equal pay for equal work, too, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission oversees workplace discrimination complaints.
But enforcement of these laws is always a challenge, advocates say.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
