76% Informative
Jeffrey Goldberg , editor in chief of The Atlantic , was added to a group chat on the encrypted messaging app Signal .
He said he was initially skeptical of the authenticity of the group, saying he believed it could have been "part of a disinformation campaign" The National Security Council said the messages seem to be "authentic" in a statement to CBS News .
"No one in the chat had seemed to notice that I was there," Goldberg says.
"The carelessness shown by President Trump 's cabinet is stunning and dangerous," he says.
Democratic Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island says the episode "represents one of the most egregious failures of operational security and common sense I have ever seen".
