Vaughn Palmer: Victoria trampling on Utilities Commission's independence, again

63% Informative
B.C. Hydro is beset by rising operating costs, expensive construction projects like Site C , and drought conditions which are forcing it to buy enormous amounts of power from outside.
The New Democrats conveyed the sense of urgency by ordering the utilities commission to approve the rate increase in 10 days .
Energy Minister Adrian Dix says the government gave the commission everything it needs to know to ink up its rubber stamp.
The New Democrats concluded that this was not the time to let the commission do the work of scrutinizing and approving the rate increase.
What if commissioners were to challenge Hydro over why it needs the full 7.5 per cent ? Or worse, ask how big a rate increase would be needed if the New Democrats hadn’t siphoned almost $700 million out of the Hydro accounts for political purposes?.
