The Social Security Administration will now require beneficiaries to prove their identity when claiming benefits or changing their direct deposit information to crack down on fraud.

The change comes as billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency is working to shrink the size of the federal government and seeks to root out fraud and waste.

The agency will train employees over the next two weeks before implementing the new measures.

The government watchdog for the Social Security Administration concluded last year that there were nearly $72 billion in improper payments from 2015 to 2022.

Most of those payments were overpayments, not to deceased Americans or people who did not qualify for them.

The Senate Finance Committee will hold a confirmation hearing next week for Frank Bisignano , who was tapped by President Donald Trump to lead the agency permanently.
