On the fifth anniversary of Windsor ’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 , local health care leaders say the region is well-prepared for the next pandemic.

The first reports of a mysterious pneumonia of unknown cause’ started making headlines in December 2019 .

By June 6, 2020 , Windsor-Essex hit 1,000 cases of the virus, one year into the pandemic, the region hit 13,000 .

Tensions peaked with the Ambassador Bridge blockade in early 2022 , when Freedom Convoy demonstrators shut down North America’s busiest trade crossing for nearly a week .

“It really felt like society had been completely divided,” said Matt Hallewick , a local critic of COVID-19 restrictions.
