Edmonton’s Garneau community pushes back on mid-block apartments in historic area

Edmonton city council heard from about a dozen people at city hall Monday , mostly members of the public who are opposed.
The property owner at 10948 89 Avenue NW wants the city to allow a building up to 16 metres tall from the current 10.5 metre limit.
The lot is 10 metres wide in the middle of the block surrounded by historic homes built in the early 1910s .
About 90 per cent of Garneau 's homes are inside buildings that are already four -storeys or taller.
Ward papastew Coun . Michael Janz , the councillor for the area, was one of only two who voted against the revision.
Mayor Amarejeet Sohi and councillors Sarah Hamilton and Aaron Paquette were absent.
Council is expected to debate the new zoning next month .
