New tinnitus treatment emerges from blocking back-channels in the ear

68% Informative
Scientists at the University of Southern California used an imaging tool to see what’s going on in the cochlea.
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) involves creating a 3D image of tissue using light waves.
The researchers genetically engineered mice to have impaired hearing, by disabling some of the nerves that carry signals from their ears to their brains.
They then used OCT to monitor the activity of the ear, and found that it was working harder than usual.
As useful as this mechanism might be to compensate for hearing loss, the team suggests that it might have unwanted side effects.
