The Nanisivik Naval Facility , a deep-sea port meant to support Arctic offshore patrol ships, is still not finished.
The project is mired in construction delays, cost overruns and serious questions about its long-term viability.
Global News can reveal the construction company building the facility went into receivership a year ago .
Foreign powers such as Russia and China are increasing their presence in the region.
Nanisivik site would provide refuelling facility for Royal Canadian Navy and other government vessels operating in the Arctic .
The project was downsized significantly after engineers discovered that the wharf was sinking.
A 2023 report from the auditor-general later panned the project, saying it would provide “little value” to Canada ’s Arctic surveillance.
Defence Minister Bill Blair announced $2.67 billion on the first three operational support hubs in Iqaluit , Yellowknife and Inuvik .
Blair said the project was “well intended,” but it “failed to take into account the circumstances” of building in the region.
In February , Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre rode in on the Arctic bandwagon to announce a permanent military base.
