Sook-Yin Lee talks adapting Chester Brown's john's-eye view Paying for It into film

Sook-Yin Lee co-wrote and directed the feature film Paying for It , which Edmonton -premieres Friday at Metro Cinema with a post-screening in-person Q+A.

The movie, like the original graphic novel, opens with Lee (“Sonny” in the film) saying, “Can we talk?” to Chester Brown .

Brown ’s book reveals the beginning of his lifelong relationship with sex workers.

The film stars Dan Beirne , Dan Brown and Emily Lê as indie-famous cartoonist Chester .

Lee was on a shoestring budget, and it was a 20-day shoot, “and I sort of created a model in which I could make the movie by really leaning on my community,” says Lee .
