The World Health Organization warns of devastating impacts in 18 countries with the highest burden of disease, many of which are in Africa .

Until recently, USAID provided about a quarter of the international donor funding for tuberculosis services in other countries.

USAID had been instrumental in conducting new surveillance to identify new therapies and diagnostic tests.

The State Department slashed nearly 5,800 of USAID ’s foreign aid awards — more than 90% of the total — according to a lawsuit filed by nonprofits and businesses that receive USAID funding.

After firing or furloughing contractors in January , the administration laid off 1,600 staffers and placed thousands more on administrative leave last month .
