Lethbridge organization supporting people with disabilities closing March 31 after losing provincial funding

Lethbridge -based Southern Alberta Individualized Planning Association (SAIPA) is closing its door at the end of the month .

Executive director Leah Dormaar said staff found out in early January that the organization was losing its main funding source, a $ 160,000 contract with the Alberta government, in 90 days .

SAIPA has been providing educational workshops, on topics such as self-determination skills, living in the community and healthy relationships.

Calgary ’s Disability Action Hall receives $ 115,000 per year.

Alberta government funding has been its primary funding source for the organization.

The organization has started an online fundraising campaign, called “ Light the Way for Self-Advocacy ,” while it attempts to secure emergency funding.

So far, $ 2,200 has been raised towards the campaign.
