NOAA and the National Weather Service are responsible for both routine and extreme weather forecasting nationwide tracking hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires, tsunamis and other potentially life-threatening events.

More than 580 NOAA staffers have already been dismissed, with more possible, union says.

NOAA has declined to comment on staffing cuts or confirm the cuts, saying the agency does not comment.

On Monday , demonstrators gathered outside of NOAA headquarters in Washington , D.C. to protest the employee dismissals.

"NOAA workers across the country are really kind of tense and waiting to hear what may happen," Sarah Cooley , former head of NOAA ’s ocean acidification program, said.

"Every aspect of everything we do outside is related to what NOAA does," said Tom Di Liberto .
