Bremen-based startup Polaris has been commissioned to develop a two -stage, fully reusable hypersonic space plane.
Dubbed Aurora , the aircraft will be part rocket, part plane and be able to take off and land on a runway but also blast through the atmosphere and place payloads up to 1-ton in low- Earth orbit.
The aircraft will serve as a testbed for hypersonics flight and defence research.
Polaris has already built three demonstrators of its Aurora spaceplane.
