Admiral Kuznetsov was designed to support submarines and aircraft that carried missiles as well as surface ships.
The Soviet Navy built the ship in 1983 and launched it in 1985 .
It was intended to operate in subordination to missile submarines in the bastions of the Arctic .
In the fall of 1991 , Ukraine declared independence from the USSR and tensions between the two states began to arise.
The newly formed state decided to keep it, but the Soviets wanted their vessel back.
Admiral Kuznetsov has been undergoing refurbishments and upgrades to extend her service life since 2018 .
The Russian Navy struggles to sustain its only carrier and keep her operational.
The vessel was equipped with six to eight SU 33 fighters, 4 Mid 29 KRKUVR multi role aircraft, KA52K Ketron navalized attack helicopters and KA31R Helix AE W&C helicopters.
