The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration first identified the toxic chemical bis ( 2,2,6,6 -tetramethyl-4-piperidyl) sebacate, or BTMPS , when testing fentanyl there last June .
The RCMP says the same chemical hasn’t been found in fentanyl on this side of the border, suggesting different criminal sources for the drug.
She said the BTMPS could have resulted from cartel chemists “attempting to make one of the precursors.” While several fentanyl “superlabs” have been found in B.C. over the last year , the RCMP believes the Canadian product was generally destined for the domestic market, Seyed said.
