Edmonton closer to first Nordic spa after rezoning next to river valley approved

71% Informative
Scandinave Group is planning to build its fifth spa location in Canada backing onto the North Saskatchewan River Valley .
The site was the site of the famed Mactaggart family mansion known as Soaring .
The spa will offer hydrotherapy, including saunas, steam baths, whirlpools and cold plunges.
The potential for the spa to become a tourist attraction was a common thread among voices in support of the rezoning.
Council heard the new zoning includes restrictions that ban development below the top of the river bank.
The project is “fundamentally at odds’ with the city’s goals around climate action and conservation.
The city is also negotiating with the University of Alberta on buying a 10-metre strip along the northern property line.
