The C5 Galaxy came about in the mid 1960s when the US Air Force recognized its need for a plane that could move its really big cargo loads around the globe.

The latest variant is the C5M Super Galaxy , powered by 4 General Electric CF6ADC2 turbofan engines, each generating roughly 50,000 lbs of thrust, enough to launch this massive airlifter off a runway in surprisingly short order.

The C5 Super Galaxy can carry heavy military vehicles like the M1 Abrams main battle tank, which can weigh around 68 tons .

It can also be used for humanitarian missions transporting urgent supplies such as food, water, medical supplies for areas ravaged by natural disasters.

Even NASA has used the C5 's hauling power for critical satellite missions.
