When you turn a bomber into the first jetliner - 707
56% Informative
In 1955 , Boeing invited airlines to witness what they described as history in the making a new type of passenger plane.
It's like never seen before, but instead of a simple tour and fly by, the test pilot did a series of impromptu manoeuvres that left everybody watching on the ground.
This barrel roll would cement the story of the first Boeing jetliner for generations and herald in a new era for aviation transport.
Boeing would bet the entire company on building a fully functioning prototype without any orders.
The first prototype of the Boeing 707 , the Dash 80, was built by hand and could be custom built for any specifications.
The aircraft was a huge success for the company, with 110 aircraft being built over the course of the aircraft's run.
Boeing went on to produce the first production model, the 707 -120, with it being certified and entering into service with Pan American in 1958 .
