Carlo Telechea , 28 , pleaded guilty in April 2023 to the aggravated assault of Sgt . Anil Singh , and to disarming a peace officer.
CCTV footage shows him acting in an “aggressive and confrontational manner” towards the hotel’s security guard and front desk clerk before Singh arrived.
Singh was responding to a call about a person trespassing in a downtown Vancouver hotel lobby and refusing to leave, when he ended up fighting for his life and being beaten with his own baton.
Defence counsel suggested a conditional sentence of two years less a day .
Justice Baker said she accepted Telechea deeply regrets his actions which led to this conviction, and has made significant progress in addressing his addiction and antisocial behaviour.
Singh said he’s haunted by survivor's guilt, knowing many other law enforcement officers across the country do not live to share their stories.
The Vancouver Police Union said an officer is assaulted every three days in the city.
