Richard Smith will replace Vancouver Archbishop Michael Miller , who is retiring at age 78.

Smith co-ordinated Pope Francis ’s historic visit to Canada in 2022 , when the pontiff apologized for the treatment of Indigenous people.

Miller has formally apologized on at least two occasions for what happened to many of the roughly 125,000 Indigenous students who attended residential schools.

Almost all the Indigenous schools were closed by the 1970s .

Smith is coming to preside over a Catholic archdiocese that includes 52 schools, 77 parishes, more than 200 priests, four colleges and three cemeteries. More than half the archdiocese’s members are people of colour, including about 100,000 of Filipino origin, 25,000 of Chinese ancestry, 21,000 rooted in Latin America and 8,000 from Korea ..
