Tennessee leaders raise alarm that NIH spending cap will hamstring medical research

The National Institutes of Health updated its policies Feb. 7 to establish a 15% cap on how much of a grant's value the agency will provide researchers to cover indirect costs associated with research.

Direct costs, on the other hand, cover the core project expenses: salaries, equipment and travel.

This new standard is part of the cuts put into motion as President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk purge America 's federal agencies through the DOGE initiative.

University of Tennessee , Vanderbilt University , Meharry Medical College and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital leaders sent a letter to you asking for your help to rescind a policy change from the National Institutes of Health .

The letter writers say the change would "devastate biomedical research" in the state.
