China Rescues Stranded Lunar Satellites

China has successfully delivered a pair of satellites into lunar orbit after a rocket failure.

The spacecraft were stranded in low Earth orbit after the failure of a rocket's upper stage.

A 167-day-long effort was carried out using complex calculations and precise engine burns.

The operation included five orbital maneuvers, five further trajectory corrections, and three gravity assists from the Earth and moon .

DRO-A , at least, also carries a science payload in the form of an all-sky monitor to detect gamma-ray bursts, particularly those associated with gravitational wave events, such as colliding black holes, neutron star collisions, and supernovae.

The mission reinforces China ’s growing expertise in deep space navigation and complex orbital rescues.
